PUNE If you plan to present a bouquet of roses in full bloom to your loved one, Valentine’s Day may end up being a tad bit expensive. The price of a single rose is expected to surge to Rs30 in the retail market by February 14. In the past three years, the cost has hovered around Rs20 to Rs25, per rose, at the most.Retailers said the drastic rise in prices is a result of the huge demand for the blooms on V-Day as well as the 10 wedding ‘mahurats’ this February, as against three last year. They added that while the extreme winter helped roses bloom bigger, it slowed the rose flush period, leading to short supplies. While a temperature drop enhances the quality and size of flowers, it prolongs the flower flush from 45 to 50 days.Praveen Sharma, president of the Indian Society of Floriculture Professionals, told TOI that this February has Valentine’s Day when the market peaks, followed by 10 mahurats for the wedding season. “These mahurats are spread throughout the month unlike last year. Due to increased demand, the wholesale price will fluctuate between Rs250 to 350, per bunch of 20 flowers,” said Sharma.Sharda Bajaj, proprietor of Life in Colour, said, “Maximum exports are undertaken during the winter season, while the domestic market gets its supply of roses for Valentine’s Day from February 12. Currently, there is a demand for roses but the supply is low, hence prices are high,” said Bajaj. She added that normally the wholesale price of each rose is Rs10 to Rs12.50. “The price per rose is expected to increase to Rs30 in the retail market by February 14. Last year, retail price on V-Day was Rs20 for a normal rose and Rs25 for a long-stemmed rose. Since the last three years, retailers have been paying Rs10, per rose, to wholesalers. But this year, they are expecting us to pay Rs15. To compensate, we would have to charge customers a higher amount,” said Bajaj.Explaining the connection between the low temperature and the delay in harvest, Sharma said, “The normal flush is expected in about 45 days, where as, if the temperature drops, the growth gets slower, but enhances the quality causing bigger blooms and a longer stem. However, the flush duration gets prolonged from 45 to 50-52 days.”
