MahaMetro to link elevated, underground legs

A detailed plan is being chalked out to ensure that work is finished within the stipulated time frame,” an official said.The MahaMetro has already started work on a vertical shaft at agriculture college. The ramp, measuring 600-800m, will reach a depth of 18m underground, from where the underground rail will run till Swargate.While the actual work on digging the tunnels has yet to begin, MahaMetro officials said they decided to construct the ramp to save time. The shaft will be used to lower tunnel-boring machines, which would dig the tunnels for the Metro project.

Of the 16.6km route, 11.5km will be elevated and comprise nine stations, while the last five stations (including Swargate ), spread over 5.1km, will be underground.The Metro will run on the viaduct till Range Hills, after which it will start descending.The route will reach ground level at the College of Agriculture in Shivajinagar, at which point it will plunge underground.Work on construction of the ramp kicked off on Thursday at the College of Agriculture in the presence of district guardian minister Girish Bapat, who broke ground for the project. The ramp, measuring 600-800m, will reach a depth of 18m underground, from where the underground rail will run till Swargate.While the actual work on digging the tunnels has yet to begin, MahaMetro officials said they decided to construct the ramp to save time. Bapat termed the underground section the most crucial part of the Metro construction work. “The work is being executed by an expert agency using advanced technology,” he said.Bapat added that the state government as well as the civic administration will see to it that residents in the vicinity, affected by the project’s construction, will be rehabilitated.Bapat was referring to more than 250 families in Kasba Peth that stand to be displaced by the project. Bapat pledged that the families will be rehabilitated in the same area.For this purpose, MahaMetro has identified a plot of land and a defunct market building in the area. The officials plan to construct a residential building on the plot, which currently houses an unused municipal school, while the market will be used to rehabilitate small businesses and traders.Touching upon the progress of work on the two lines running through Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, Bapat said it has proceeded at a fair clip so far. Stating that 30% of the work has been completed in two years, he urged MahaMetro officials to maintain the pace.A MahaMetro official said they have appointed Gulermak-TPL to design and construct the underground tunnels between the agriculture college and the northern end of the Budhwar Peth station. “The firm will also construct the underground stations at Shivajinagar and Civil Court. A detailed plan is being chalked out to ensure that work is finished within the stipulated time frame,” an official said.The MahaMetro has already started work on a vertical shaft at agriculture college. The shaft will be used to lower tunnel-boring machines, which would dig the tunnels for the Metro project. A Metro depot is also coming up in the vicinity.“We will ensure various agencies involved the different projects will coordinate with each other,” an official said.
