PUNE: The Pune airport authorities are currently in the midst of discussions to create a common security hold area on the first floor of the terminal building in an effort to make more space for flyers.The authorities said that while the interconnection of the two security hold areas, located on the ground and first floor had been undertaken last year, the fresh move was related to creating a common security check-in and waiting area on the first floor just like that on the ground floor of the airport.“There are talks going on pertaining to this. A system, similar to the one made last year on the ground floor, will be created on the first floor. However, a final decision is expected to be taken soon. The idea is to modify and use the existing terminal building in such a way that more space can be created,” an airport official told TOI.Last month, the airport authorities had shut down the child care room located near the smoking room on the first floor of the building. “While the smoking room has been opened after proper renovation, the child care room is yet to open. The common area will help passengers sitting in the security hold area on the first floor easily access the restaurant located at the other side. By doing this, more space will be created,” the official pointed out.The airport authorities had recently said that many steps had been taken to increase the capacity at the existing terminal building and the seating capacity had been increased.“Once it’s ready by 2021, the new terminal building will increase the total size of the terminal building to 42,300-square meters. However, the building will be ready only in the next two years. So, we have to undertake many adjustments in order to use all the existing infrastructure we have and ensure that the passengers have a hassle-free flying experience,” the official said.Expanding further on the plan for the first floor, the official said, “Right now, there is a tunnel-like passage through which flyers can access the restaurant area. We aim to increase the space and, if done, it will lead to an increase in seating capacity and easier access.”
