Pune: A 28-year-old IT professional has accused the Lonikand police of not registering an FIR related to a theft on Monday night and asking her uncomfortable questions.“What were you doing so late at night?” Sana Shahidi quoted a Lonikand police station personnel as asking her when she wanted to file the first information report (FIR).When she asked why an FIR wasn’t being registered, she accused an officer of saying: “You are a good looking woman... You should be thankful that you were not harmed.”No FIR was registered on Tuesday also, though she was made to wait at the police station from 10am till 1:30pm. Shahidi alleged that she was made to write a statement that she “lost” her belongings.Admitting that the matter was “serious”, superintendent of police, Pune (rural), Sandip Patil vowed an inquiry against the officers concerned.Inspector Pratap Mankar denied that any officer present at the Lonikand police station “spoke in a sexist way” with the complainant.Around 11.30pm on Monday, Shahidi was travelling from Vimannagar to her house in Wagholi on her gearless two-wheeler.She said, “Just before the sports goods store Decathlon, a biker suddenly pulled my hand and snatched the bag I had kept on the floorboard of the scooter and fled. I started screaming and honking. I tried to follow him, but in vain. The number plate of the bike was missing.”She added, “I called a friend and went to the Lonikand police station with him to file an FIR. The first question was what I was doing with him so late at night. When my friend told the police that I was alone, they wrote something in a notebook and told me to come back on Tuesday at 10am.”Shahidi visited the police station at 10am on Tuesday. “But I was made to wait till 1:30pm. I was finally told to write a letter in Hindi, stating that I have lost my bag. But when I told the officer that it was a theft case, he told me, ‘You are a good looking woman. Anything could have happened to you. You should be thankful that you were not harmed’.” she said.“I was frustrated and wrote that I have lost my purse with important documents in it,” Shahidi added.Mankar said the staffers at the Lonikand police station “are extremely polite”. He added, “The FIR was not registered because she only lost some documents. But if she has complaints, we will register an FIR if she comes to the police station.”Patil said, “I will tell the thanadar to register a proper complaint. The complainant can submit a complaint letter to me about non-responsiveness of the local police, so that I can take action against them.”
