Boy trapped in borewell rescued after 16-hr op

PUNE: After a 16-hour rescue operation, a 31-member team of the National Disaster Response Force pulled six-year-old Ravi Bhil out of the borewell he was trapped in at 9am on Thursday.Ravi had fallen into an open borewell at Thorandale village in Ambegaon taluka on Wednesday at 4.30pm. Though the locals had started the rescue efforts, the NDRF experts reached the spot and started their operation at about 7.45pm and continued it all night long.NDRF deputy commandant Alok Kumar, who led the team, said the operation required meticulous planning. We are outsiders, but the locals, police and NDRF helped us.

Kumar added that boulders in the ground posed a problem. Though rescuers got to the boy early on Thursday morning, it took till 9am to safely extract him as Ravi’s lower body had got tangled with a gunny bag and had got stuck.Tehsildar Sushma Paikekari said Ravi has been sent to a rural hospital in Manchar and is out of danger. Praising the NDRF, she said, “They took utmost care. While breaking the side of the borewell, one man shielded the boy with his hand.”K K Kharade, Ambegaon police station inspector , said, “We will take action against persons responsible for the accident.”Just seven months ago, Ravi lost his mother. Since then his father Pandit Bhil’s sister, Sunita More, has been taking care of him. During the rescue operation, Bhil and More kept talking to Ravi. “God has given me my son back. We are outsiders, but the locals, police and NDRF helped us. I do not have words to thank them,” said Pandit Bhil.
