Pune: The temperature in at least 14 places in the state is nearing the 40 degrees-C mark in the supposedly cool winter month of February. “After February 22, this effect may partly reduce for temporary period and the maximum temperatures could fall from that day or the next. Parts of Maharashtra may also witness this phenomenon at isolated areas during the current high temperature period. With moderately strong winds during the evening hours, dust particles get suspended in these eddies, causing a haze-like situation. “Such temperatures are especially seen in barren lands and drought-prone dry areas.

Pune: The temperature in at least 14 places in the state is nearing the 40 degrees-C mark in the supposedly cool winter month of February. Among these places, Pune, Malegaon, Mahabaleshwar, Kolhapur, Satara and Beed recently registered record day temperatures. On Wednesday, Malegaon, Mahabaleshwar, Kolhapur and Satara registered their highest maximum temperatures for the month in over a year while Beed was the hottest location in the country on that day at 39 degrees C.On Thursday, at least 19 locations in the state had day temperatures over 35 degrees C. In most of these locations, the day temperature departures were high — from around 3 degrees C to 5 degrees C.Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather at IMD Pune, told TOI that a rise in day temperature is a run-up to the upcoming summer (pre-monsoon) season, which begins from March each year. “Though our extended range forecasts continue to indicate that the winter may be a little prolonged this time due to the consecutive western disturbances affecting north as well as central India, day temperatures have begun to rise owing to a change in wind pattern over Maharashtra,” he said.Kashyapi said pockets in north Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Marathwada are being exposed to southerly and southeasterly winds, resulting in a rise in maximum temperatures over these regions. “After February 22, this effect may partly reduce for temporary period and the maximum temperatures could fall from that day or the next. Minimum temperatures, which are currently above 15 degrees C in most locations, may also marginally drop from then for a short period,” he said.Kashyapi said the topography and soil type of locations currently experiencing high day temperatures is aiding the rising mercury. “Such temperatures are especially seen in barren lands and drought-prone dry areas. The lack of water bodies and vegetation in such locations also aids the rise in maximum temperature,” he said.Kashyapi said that with temperatures going beyond 37-38 degrees C as the season advances and with a reduction in moisture levels due to hot, dry easterlies or south-easterlies, small low-pressure pockets termed as eddies tend to develop over open land areas. With moderately strong winds during the evening hours, dust particles get suspended in these eddies, causing a haze-like situation. Parts of Maharashtra may also witness this phenomenon at isolated areas during the current high temperature period.
