PUNE: In the second gold catch in four days, the Pune customs authorities on Sunday caught a man who had landed in Pune from Dubai on a SpiceJet flight (SG-52) and recovered gold worth Rs14.66 lakh in a semi-solid paste form from him. The man from Karnataka has been identified as Mohammed Nakhib Shabber Hasan Bapu.“The man was wearing jeans and the waist area of the cloth has been slit open and the gold paste, which had been concealed in a polythene strip, had been inserted in the waistband and the cloth was then re-stitched,” an official told TOI.The official said the man was behaving in a suspicious manner which led the customs officials to conduct a through check. “A personal search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of a polythene strip which contained the gold weighing 559.60gm,” the official said.On Thursday, the customs officials recovered gold from two women, both Sri Lankan nationals at the Pune airport . They had smuggled gold worth Rs 30 lakh. The women had arrived in Pune from Singapore on a Jet Airways flight and were walking through the green channel without declaring anything when they were stopped.Upon checks, it was found that they were carrying 24-carat gold in the form of bangles, chains and biscuits weighing close to one kg.“Thursday’s catch was the first involving the Jet Airways Singapore flight which started from Pune in December. In both the cases, the carriers were arrested under the reasonable belief that the gold they were carrying was being smuggled into India and hence liable for confiscation under the Customs Act 1962. In the Sunday’s catch, the man’s statement was recorded and he admitted to possession, carriage, concealment and recovery of the gold. Further investigations in both the cases are underway,” the official added. The official said they were keeping a close eye on all international passengers. “ There are not many tourist visits from January to April and the airfares too are low. Hence, there is a chance when such cases go up. We are keeping a close watch,” the official told TOI.
