Helmet saves life of RPF constable on Saswad Rd

The truck driver picked up speed and fled towards Hadapsar,” Akhade said.“My neighbour Chandrakant Kamble, who was at the spot, took me to a hospital on a two-wheeler and got me admitted.

PUNE: A 36-year-old Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable avoided serious head injuries, thanks to his helmet, after his two-wheeler skidded on Saswad Road.Bharat Sandipan Akhade was on his way to the railway station for bandobast duty on Wednesday afternoon, when a car ahead of him stopped suddenly. Akhade lost control of his scooter and fell to his right, smashing his head on the road. As he was wearing a helmet, Akhade did not suffer any head injuries.However, a truck ran over his left hand, breaking three fingers and severely injuring his palm. The mishap occurred at 2.25pm near Gondhalenagar bus stop on Saswad Road.“I was on my way to the RPF office via Shani temple and Gondhalenagar bus stop. A car was ahead of me, while a truck was driving on my right. The car driver applied sudden brakes, so I too applied brakes. But I lost control and fell on the right side of the busy road,” Akhade, a resident of Gurudutt Colony in Bhekrainagar, near Hadapsar , told TOI.“I managed to push myself out of the way of the truck, but its front tyre ran over my hand,” he added. “The accident could have been tragic had I not been wearing a helmet. I appealed to passers-by to note down the truck’s registration number, but they were in a panic as my hand was bleeding. The truck driver picked up speed and fled towards Hadapsar,” Akhade said.“My neighbour Chandrakant Kamble, who was at the spot, took me to a hospital on a two-wheeler and got me admitted. The doctor who attended to me said three fingers were fractured and my palm was seriously injured,” Akhade said.Akhade has registered an FIR against the unidentified truck driver. “There are no CCTV cameras at the accident spot, but investigations have revealed that two vehicles with a similar description had passed the spot, and one of them had run over the constable’s hand. We are checking CCTV cameras at other places to identify the truck in question,” policeman Navnath Bhosale of the Hadapsar police, who is looking into the case, said.
