Robbery gang busted, booty worth Rs 1.41L seized

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch detected four cases of robbery and recovered valuables worth Rs1.41 lakh after busting a four-member gang on Tuesday.The arrested suspects have been identified as Manoj Gaikwad (24), Nasir Shaikh (25), Someshwar Mhaske (22) from Beed district and Raghunath Kalakekar (25) from Nanded district . All four currently reside in Bhosari.An officer from the crime branch said the suspects had stolen the valuables on the pretext of offering lifts. Two of the cases were registered with the Hinjewadi police station and one each with the Wakad and Warje Malwadi police stations.The robbers were arrested after a cellphone stolen by the suspects was activated near Bhosari. “On February 10, central government staffer Mukesh Kapoor sought a lift from four men near Wakad Bridge. The men then robbed him of cash, a cellphone and a tablet. The valuables stolen from Kapoor were collectivity worth Rs1.25 lakh. During investigations, the robbed cellphone was tracked near Bhosari. The police traced the woman who was using the phone and brought her to the crime branch for questioning. The woman revealed that she had received the cellphone as a gift from her friend Someshwar Mhaske,” the officer said.The woman also told the police that Mhaske was staying with his friends in Bhosari. “Further investigations revealed that Mhaske and his friends had a criminal record. This caught the suspicion of the police and a crime branch team led by senior inspector Sudhir Aspat swung into action to nab the suspects,” the officer said.The police team took all the four men into custody on Tuesday. “During questioning, the suspects admitted to their involvement in robbing a person by offering him a lift on February 10. The police recovered some of the valuables that the suspects stole from Kapoor, including 40,000, his cellphone and the tablet — collectively worth Rs68,000,” the officer said.The gang had also robbed a 53-year-old man at the same spot in Hinjewadi and one each at Wakad and Warje. “The police have recovered three cellphones and other valuables worth Rs73,000 from them,” the officer added.The police have recovered a few more cellphones from the gang. “We suspect that the four used similar modus to rob several others. But no such complaints have been registered so far. Our probe is on,” said sub-inspector Vitthal Badhe.
