Drive against illegal water connections in PCB limits

Pune: The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB), in association with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), will carry out a drive against illegal water connections in its jurisdiction by next week.There are hundreds of unauthorised connections in PCB areas. The PMC is now ready to extend its support, which is a positive development for us,” a senior PCB official told TOI on Friday.The PCB is yet to clear pending water bills amounting to Rs27 crore to the PMC.“We have paid Rs1 crore to the civic body. The remaining amount will be paid once we sort out confusion over the bills,” said PCB chief executive officer DN Yadav.However, a senior official from the PMC’s water department said that the PCB officials as well as the elected board members needed to be present during the survey.“Violators will oppose the drive and there is a possibility of a law and order situation. Therefore, it is necessary to work together to carry out the drive effectively. Otherwise, we will not be able to achieve the desired results,” the official added.According to PCB vice-president Priyanka Shirigiri, only 30% population in PCB has legal connections.“Previous elected board members had allowed people to take water connections sans statutory meters. We reported this fact to the board on many occasions but in vain,” said a board member.A section of board officials blamed the PMC authorities for not replacing old water pipelines despite several requests in the last five years. “The board has replaced old lines in Ghorpadi and some other areas in the last two years,” the official added.
