Nursing teacher resuscitates woman rescued from dam

Pune: A nursing teacher used the skills she teaches her students to great effect recently, saving the life of a 22-year-old woman who had attempted suicide by jumping into Khadakwasla dam.“The woman had almost drowned in the water. She was in an unconscious state,” said the teacher, Sharmila Dhumal-Sathe.“It was necessary to flush out the water in her lungs. “The woman jumped into the waters after having a fight with a man,” the officer said. The swimmers rescued the woman and placed her on the bank. They told her that a woman had jumped into the dam waters and that a few swimmers entered the water to rescue her.“I went down to the water’s edge.

Some swimmers had pulled her out of the water and brought her to the bank. She was in an unconscious state,” said the teacher, Sharmila Dhumal-Sathe.“It was necessary to flush out the water in her lungs. After checking her pulse, I gave her Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and within a few minutes, she started breathing,” she said.“The woman is a 22-year-old and had apparently attempted suicide by jumping into the water from Sinhagad Road,” Dhumal-Sathe said.Dhumal-Sathe, a resident of Narhe, had gone to seek admission for her daughter at a school in Khadakwasla. After meeting the teachers, she left the school and was heading home when she spotted a crowd near the dam site, popularly known as Khadakwasla chowpatty.Dhumal-Sathe stopped and asked the bystanders about what happened. They told her that a woman had jumped into the dam waters and that a few swimmers entered the water to rescue her.“I went down to the water’s edge. People there enquired if I knew any life-saving techniques. When I said I did, people made way for me. The swimmers rescued the woman and placed her on the bank. I immediately felt for a pulse and gave her CPR. Once her pulse resumed, I took her to a nearby hospital,” she said. “I thought it was my duty. I teach students about such emergency cases and how to treat such patients. I just did my job and practised what I preach,” she said.She also checked the medication provided to the woman by the hospital staff. “As soon as the woman regained consciousness, I called her family members, who came to the hospital,” she said.A senior officer from the Haveli police station said they have not registered a case against the woman, who is a resident of Khadakwasla village. “The woman jumped into the waters after having a fight with a man,” the officer said. The woman and her family refused to comment on the issue.
