Pune: Residents of La Valle Casa — a Bavdhan-based housing society that suffered the most during the construction of the Chandni Chowk flyover — have made the same road development project the theme of their Ganapati pandal this year. The installation is a carbon-copy of the six-lane road that links NDA Chowk to Bavdhan and Pashan. The replica installed also has road dividers, street lights, underpass heading towards Bhugaon and paintings on the sidewalls.Akshay Baijal, a resident of the society, said their cultural committee was discussing about the decoration theme for Ganeshotsav. Chandrayaan was an obvious choice for everyone. But, we wanted to do something different. This is when the idea of Chandni Chowk came up. All the members executed the idea pretty well, he said.Another resident of the society said all the residents knew what they went through during the construction of the flyover. Dust was a major issue. One of the solar panels of our society was damaged after being hit by a stone during the blasts carried out by the authorities. We used to feel the tremors after every blasts. Our parents and children were unable to sleep after that. Some of our row houses had even developed cracks, he said. The bad patch is over now. Hence, we have come up with the Chandni Chowk theme for the 10-day festival, he added.Nadeem Shaikh, the main architect behind the Chandni Chowk model, told TOI that the material used for the model was locally sourced. We used cardboard sheets and paper for making the model. We have also put the girders similar to the actual overpass. For the girders we used thermocol that comes along with the packing materials, Shaikh said.Residents also painted the hills that surrounds the actual project. Children in our society have beautifully painted the skyline. Overall, it was a well coordinated effort, he added.Anuradha Makhe, another resident, said everything in the design was developed from scratch and is handmade. The paintings are inspired by the actual paintings on the bridge and the hills surrounding the Chandni Chowk, she said.Rishaa Gaur, a student who lives in the society, said it was wonderful being part of the team that prepared the model. It was difficult and challenging to replicate Chandni Chowk, but looking at the end result is quite satisfying. In the past our society faced many issues due to the flyover work. My only prayer is that the vehicular traffic on the road is just like it appears in our model, Gaur said.
