Pune: The faulty attendance system in government schools is all set to undergo an overhaul with technology being used for maintaining accurate daily records. A chatbot named Vidya Samiksha Kendra will have to be downloaded by teachers on their smartphones, and daily attendance of students as per UDISE+ records will be updated through a chat window every day.UDISE+ is a management information systems covering at least 15 lakh schools, 95 lakh teachers and 26.5 crore children in the country. The chatbot will eliminate all previous gaps in missing names, delayed registrations, and proxy attendance among others. The system will be implemented soon after Diwali vacation across the schools.State project director of Maharashtra Prathmik Shikshan Parishad Pradeepkumar Dange said that the attendance bot will be used for standards I to X. Teachers have to download Swift Chat application from Playstore through which they can log in the attendance on a daily basis between 10am and 5pm. Teachers must register on the app with the cellphone numbers that they have registered on Shalarth portal. They can also use the login of other teachers if they face issues with their own logins in order to expedite the attendance process.Teachers said that the system was in tune with the latest technology but smooth implementation would be a challenge. Suresh Kale, a teacher from Pune zilla parishad school, said, In urban areas, there are not many challenges and it should run smoothly. In fact, for places where connectivity is great, this seems to be the best solution for collated attendance data unless teachers do not update. The real challenge will be where cellphone network is a perennial problem."Another teacher from Pune district, Sheela Gosavi, said the most important part of such government initiatives always is its effective implementation and there is no guarantee that all the teachers will install this app and record the attendance properly. In March this year, TOI had reported that teachers and principals were facing hurdles in updating daily attendance, Aadhaar details and other information about pupils on the state governments student portal because of its slow speed. The teachers had said that they are worried as all the details need to be uploaded within a stipulated time. The state commissioner for education had assured that a technical team was working on the portal and the problem would be resolved. Some teachers had said that they were taking turns to log in to the system and update the data, and that it took nearly 10 minutes to make one update in the system.Another teacher had said that she had to wait after school hours to update the information, and as a result, much of her time was spent waiting since the system was slow.
