Fugitive undertrials plotted escape for six months: Cops

They have yet to be apprehended.A senior police officer told TOI on the condition of anonymity that they had plotted their escape in prison six months ago. About three months ago, Pune rural police had sent a precautionary letter to Ahmednagar , Satara and Pune city police forces, informing them of the escape plan.The officer, who is monitoring the investigations, informed TOIthat police had gathered the information from prison sources. PUNE: The April 11 escape of three undertrial inmates in the Katraj ghat section had been in the planning for six months, according to the police.Raja Patre, Santosh Jatgap, and Santosh Chandilkar aka Lubya had given their police escort the slip while returning to Yerawada Central Prison from Satara . "The report was based on inputs received from the prison authorities," the officer said.The officer said the precautionary letter warned the police concerned that the suspects might attempt to escape during their commutation between prisons and the courts based in Pune city , Ahmednagar and Satara districts. However, the police were not able to foil the escape bid.According to the officer, their biggest worry is that Chandilkar might try to help the members of his 14-strong gang break out of prison, especially Satpal Rupnawar , identified as the brains behind Chandilkar's outfit.Chandilkar has a long criminal record with Paud, Lonavla, Walchandnagar, Jejuri, and Dehu Road police stations.Afew other serious offences -including murder, attempted murder, and robbery -are also registered against him at the Satara and Ahmednagar district police units.
