PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: The civic body will start alternate day water supply from May 2 in areas across its limits, mayor Nitin Kalje said on Tuesday .The decision was taken at a meeting attended by various office-bearers of the civic body and group leaders of corporators. This is the second consecutive year that the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is going for the alternate day water supply ."The water supply department will prepare a detail plan on the timings and areas before implementing the alternate day supply plan. Residents should ensure judicious use of the available water and plug wastage," Kalje said."There is no need to panic now, as Pavana dam is filled up to 38.37%. The irrigation department has told the civic body that the available water can meet our as well as other dependent civic bodies' drinking water needs up to July 31. The daily consumption in the city is increasing with the rapid population growth. The possibility of scanty rainfall in June can't be ruled out," he told TOI.The water supply department is supplying once-a-day water across the city . "There will be a 25% cut once the alternate day supply plan is implemented. But this will not have any severe impact on the citizens. They get the same amount of drinking water at a higher pressure," Kalje said."If monsoon gets delayed, a review meeting will be held on increasing the cut. The water cut will be withdrawn if it rains sufficiently in the beginning of monsoon and the dam starts filling up," the mayor added. Ravindra Dudhekar, joint city engineer and chief of water supply department, said, "This is a pro-active step adopted by the civic body to avoid any future trouble." Eknath Pawar , ruling party leader in the PCMC, said, "Saving water is a must. We appeal to people to use the available water judiciously and cooperate with the civic body ."Opposition party leader Yogesh Behl said the civic administration must try to implement the water supply scheme immediately to bring water from Bhama Askhed and Andra dams.Rahul Kalate, group leader of the Shiv Sena corporators, said, "We had promised in our election manifesto that the PCMC must try to construct a dam of its own. This is necessary as the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) has its own dams to meet the drinking water needs of its citizens. This is a long-term solution for meeting the growing water needs."
