Pune: Road dividers, pedestrian crossings and improving safety around major junctions are urgently needed to improve driving conditions on Baner Road , feels Prashant Inamdar, the convener of Pedestrians First. The activist for pedestrian safety on Thursday evening sent a letter covering the suggestions to municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar and deputy commissioner of police Pravin Mundhe. "All 13 junctions on Baner Road need to be reconfigured for better road safety, especially Someshwar Chowk, Saikar Chowk and Radha Chowk," he stated in his letter.Inamdar also suggested speed breakers, uniform carriageway width and blinkers before accident prone sectors, among other suggestions.Work should be prioritized on the accident prone areas, Inamdar said. According to him, this will help check the problems posed by road width, vehicle speeds and jaywalking pedestrians.Inamdar has also mooted the idea of safer mid-block and junction crossings for pedestrians with proper zebra crossings, footpaths, rumbler strips, signage and pedestrian signals. Pegging his ideas on the fatal accident on Baner Road on April 10 that killed two persons of the same family, Inamdar stressed on the need to make roads safer for all citizens.A joint survey was conducted by engineers of the Pune Municipal Corporation and the traffic police department on April 25 to assess the problems plaguing the busy road.Among Inamdar's primary suggestions is to extend the length of the parabolic concrete road divider up to Radha Chowk (Hotel Sadanand) to replace the curb stone-like structure along the road, after Someshwar Chowk.
