PUNE: India became independent politically, but education here is still under the influence of western ideology, O P Kohli, the governor of Gujarat, said on Saturday.Kohli was the chief guest for the two-day national seminar on 'Ethos in Bharatiya Tradition of Education and Contemporary Context '. It was organized by Prabodhan Manch at Savitribai Phule Pune University."The roots of education should be based on a country's culture. Despite over 900 years of Muslim rule in India, we were only defeated politically, but not mentally. So, the people were mentally independent. But only 190 years of English rule defeated us both politically and mentally. After independence, we are in a state of slavery and this slavery must be destroyed by education. For this, education here should be Indianised and linked to culture. There is a need to bring Indian thought into various topics," Kohli further said.He also blamed the British rule for the feeling of inferiority and lack of values and principles among people of India."There were world education centres in Indian cities of Takshashila and Nalanda . Now, there is a need to balance the traditional education and realities of the situation," SPPU vice chancellor Nitin Karmalkar said.In his keynote address, Krishna Gopal of RSS talked about the difference between Indian and western idea of nation and nationalism. "The nationalism in Europe is based on exclusivity. In India, we believe in inclusivity," he said.
