Univs get extension to set up senate & mgmt bodies

All universities must form a Senate body on priority and hence elections for the same would be held first, followed by management and academic council elections. Many universities are initiating this process and hence there has been a delay," Tawde explained.On November 19, the senate election was held peacefully at SPPU.

Pune: Varsities in the state have been given a three-month extension to form a senate, management as well as other bodies as per the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016.Several varsities have fallen behind the deadline to process the elections and form the crucial bodies. The new deadline has been set for February 28 while the earlier target date was November 30.The act was passed last year and, accordingly, elections for the authority bodies of the universities are to be formed through elections. While at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), the Senate election was held on November 19, the process remains in progress at many other varsities across the state.State education minister Vinod Tawde on Wednesday said, "A cabinet meeting was held on Tuesday to discuss various issues that universities were facing on implementation of the new act. Delays in elections to clarity some aspects of the rules and regulations were discussed and the same would be informed to universities soon. As an immediate decision, we have extended the deadline for elections to February 28, 2018."The Senate, management council and academic council are authorities of the university that take important decisions. Many universities are initiating this process and hence there has been a delay," Tawde explained.On November 19, the senate election was held peacefully at SPPU. Voting began at 9am across the 58 designated centres in Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar. In total, there were 113 voting booths across the three districts. Apart from a few minor incidents, the senate voting process was peaceful although the overall voter turnout stood at 47.6%.
