11-day boy slips off dad’s arm into hot water, battles 80% burns

Pune: An 11-day-old baby boy sustained over 80% burns after accidentally slipping from his father's arm and falling into a bucket of hot water at Bhagyodaynagar in Kondhwa on Wednesday morning.The infant, who is yet to be named by his family, has been admitted to the Sassoon General Hospital. "After this, they rushed him to the Sassoon hospital for treatment," Gaikwad said, adding that his condition was critical.The officer added that Shaikh is a "maulvi" and teaches Arabic. His father has also sustained burn injuries on his leg and hands," a police officer said.The incident occurred when the child's father, Mohammed Sagir Shaikh (45), was trying to pick up a bucket filled with hot water while keeping the child in his arm. "The child is in a critical condition.

Around this time, Shaikh put an immersion rod in a bucket for heating water in the bedroom, which was to be used to bathe the child," senior inspector Milind Gaikwad of the Kondhwa police said.All this while, the child's mother was with her kitchen chores and had left the infant in the care of his father."While holding the baby in his arm, Shaikh went to the bedroom to switch off the immersion rod and take the bucket to the bathroom," he said, adding that Shaikh switched off the immersion rod and was picking up the bucket when the child, who was covered with oil, slipped off his arm and fell into the hot water bucket.As soon as the infant fell into the bucket, it tumbled and hot water spilled on the floor."As Shaikh tried to pick up the baby, he sustained burn injuries as well," the officer added.Meanwhile, Shaikh's wife rushed to the bedroom and picked up the baby.Together, the couple took the infant to the bathroom and poured tap water on him."After this, they rushed him to the Sassoon hospital for treatment," Gaikwad said, adding that his condition was critical.The officer added that Shaikh is a "maulvi" and teaches Arabic.
