Fined Rs 70 crore, trader commits suicide, blames GST and notebandi

RAIPUR: A businessman committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district on Sunday, leaving behind a note where he blamed GST and notebandi for driving himself over the edge.Fifty-year-old Mahaveer Chauradiya left behind a WhatsApp audio that has gone viral, naming the loan sharks “because of whom he felt provoked to end his life.” He clicked pictures of his suicide note and sent them to social media groups of businessmen and traders.‘I am tired of my life,’ Mahaveer seen saying in videoMahaveer was a finance broker and had financed huge amounts of cash to several businessmen in Rajnandgaon. Sources say he financed over Rs 70 crore in different parts of state and was under tremendous pressure to pay off the loan, but he was ditched by those he had financed.In a 3.29-minute audio, Mahaveer names three prominent businessmen, accusing them of not returning Rs 70-75 crore to him and harassing him to the point of suicide.“I am going to commit suicide. I am tired of my life. Demonetization and GST have badly affected my income. It has become difficult to collect money from people. The two businessmen (names withheld) have eaten up my money while I am feeling badly harassed and tortured with phone calls from loan sharks whom I failed to return money because those who took money from me didn’t return it. I can’t face people who trusted me and gave me money. I pray to you all to save my family and take care of them. My brothers and family members will return all the money I have borrowed from people,” Mahaveer says in the audio. He ends with seeking forgiveness.Rajnandgaon SP Prashant Agrawal said that as soon as the message went viral, police started looking for him and found his body on the railway tracks behind a mill. Police have verified that it is Mahaveer’s voice in the audio clip and they are recording statements of people associated with him.A case has been registered and the people named in the audio clip will be questioned, say police. Mahaveer leaves behind a wife and two children.
