2 inmates dead, over 50 in hospital

RAIPUR: Two prisoners died and over 50 were admitted to hospital due to diarrhoea in the past three days at Surguja district's Ambikapur Central Jail . District collector has ordered a probe into the matter while the jail water tank, kitchen, store were being checked and sanitized. According to reports, over 100 inmates fell ill and suffered from diarrhea in Ambikapur Central Jail on Monday, all of whom were immediately admitted at district hospital. A showcause notice has been issued to jail superintendent while health camps are being organized in jail so as to monitor the situation and keep a watch on health of other inmates," collector Kaushal said. "Many teams have been pressed into service and I have ordered magisterial inquiry on deaths of the two inmates.

The prisoners have suffered infection due to water or food, sources said.According to district collector Kiran Kaushal , presently 22 inmates were hospitalised while four of them were referred to Raipur for better treatment."Many teams have been pressed into service and I have ordered magisterial inquiry on deaths of the two inmates. A showcause notice has been issued to jail superintendent while health camps are being organized in jail so as to monitor the situation and keep a watch on health of other inmates," collector Kaushal said. According to reports, over 100 inmates fell ill and suffered from diarrhea in Ambikapur Central Jail on Monday, all of whom were immediately admitted at district hospital. Two of the inmates died during treatment while others eventually got discharged.The two deceased were tribal inmates identified as Gopal Ram and Palan Lohar Officials said that the inmates suffered from contagious infections which surfaced late.Even as jail premises were being thoroughly cleaned and checked, exact cause of infection is yet to be known.
