Ambulance door jams, rescue comes too late for ailing baby in Raipur

RAIPUR: An ailing two-month-old baby got locked inside an ambulance in Raipur on Tuesday for 15-20 minutes with his parents and was declared dead by doctors after he was rescued.Ambika Singh, father of the deceased baby, claims his child died of suffocation, but there is no way to confirm it because the baby was cremated without an autopsy.The public relations officer of GVK EMRI ambulance, Shibu Kumar, admitted that the door got locked but said the baby’s vitals were already poor when he was brought in. Shubhra Thakur, PRO of BR Ambedkar Hospital, also told TOI that when the child was brought in, his vital organs weren’t working. “An ECG confirmed the death. The baby had a hole in his heart.”Kumar said the baby was taken out of the vehicle within 15-20 minutes. “By the time he was checked by the doctor, he had died. The child’s vitals were critical and he had breathing problems when he boarded the ambulance. The theory that he died due to suffocation or lack of oxygen is false,” he added.The inconsolable parents waited for some assistance but the hospital management took no initiative to provide a hearse van. When the news spread, ex-Congress MLA Kuldeep Singh Juneja came forward to provide them financial assistance and accompanied them to the cremation ground.
