Fuel price protest: Congress MLAs use bullock carts

Congress MLAs led by state president Bhupesh Baghel came to the assembly on bullock carts, while other leaders including TS Singh Deo rode bikes. RAIPUR: To mark their protest against fuel price hike, opposition legislators on Wednesday reached the Vidhan Sabha on bullock carts and bicycles to attend the special session of assembly. Later, house proceedings resumed for a debate on the second supplementary demands for the fiscal r 2018-19. Baghel pointed out that BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee had reached the parliament riding a bullock cart.Higher education minister Prem Prakash Pandey described the opposition's move as a political stunt while legislative affairs minister Ajay Chandrakar said it was not a case for breach of privilege. As sloganeering ontinued, speaker Gaurishankar Agrawal said vehicle passes have been issued to the MLAs much earlier and entry to the premises had to be restricted to vehicles which had passes.However, as Baghel reiterated that legislators were stopped several times on their way to the assembly, his party colleagues continued sloganeering - forcing speak er Gaurishankar Agrawal to adjourn the house for 10 minutes.

The party leaders complained that on their way from the Congress Bhawan to Assembly, they were stopped four times by police personnel.After reaching the assembly, Congress legislators raised slogans and demanded an explanation from home minister Ram Sewak Paikra for what they termed as preventing legislators from reaching the assembly to participate in the proceedings.The legislators also spoke about moving a notice for breach of privilege against officials for preventing them reach the assembly to participate, pointing out that there are no rules for MLAs to use four-wheelers to reach the assembly.
