RAIPUR: In a significant political development that can cause a dent in state's bi-polar politics, Janata Congress, the new regional party led by former chief minister Ajit Jogi , and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have entered into a pre-poll alliance for the coming assembly elections in Chhattisgarh. As per the pre-poll alliance understanding, Janata Congress will contest for 55 seats while BSP will contest for 35 seats in the 90 member assembly. The electoral understanding between Janata Congress and BSP is being seen as a major setback for the opposition Congress-which has been trying to wrest power from the BJP after a span of 15 years. There were also indications that Congress and BSP are also exploring the possibility of an alliance but senior Congress leader Charandas Mahant made a public statement in July this year that if an alliance with the Congress party is possible, Congress would be unable to spare more than five seats-throwing a spanner in the works. This deal puts an end to talks of an alliance with the BSP and the Congress for now. After a meeting at Lucknow, BSP Supremo Mayawati and Janata Congress founder Ajit Jogi issued a joint statement describing as historic the decision for an alliance to contest the coming assembly polls scheduled to be held by November-December this year.
