Congress releases list of 12 candidates for Chhattisgarh assembly elections. Indications are that Congress could wait till the BJP releases its list of candidates for the first phase before finalising the names. However, the party is yet to release the names of its candidates for six other constituencies, which are also going to polls in the first phase.Denying party ticket to sitting legislator Shankar Dhurv from Kanker (ST) constituency, the Congress has fielded Sishupal Sori, a former IAS officer, who hails from the same region and had earlier served as district collector of Dantewada in tribal Bastar region. Sori was earlier the president of state Adivasi Congress.Congress Legislature Party (CLP) deputy leader Kawasi Lakma has been re-nominated to contest from Konta (ST) constituency, which falls in one of the worst Maoist-affected areas.Similarly, sitting legislator Manoj Mandavi has been nominated to contest for Bhanupratappur (ST) seat while other sitting MLAs Santram Netam will contest for Keshkal (ST), Mohan Markam for Kondgaon (ST), Lakeshwar Baghel for Bastar (ST), Deepak Baij for Chirakot (ST), Devki Karma for Dantewada (ST) seats.Congress candidate Vikram Shah Mandavi has been fielded from Bijapur (ST) constituency which at present is being represented by forest minister Mahesh Gagda while Chandan Kashyap will take on school education minister Kedar Kashyap from Narayanpur (ST) constituency. For the lone unreserved seat of Jagdalpur in Bastar region, Rakhchand Jain will be the Congress candidate. Anoop Naag has been fielded to contest for the Antagarh (ST) seat.Devki Karma, who has been re-nominated to contest for Dantewada (ST) seat, is the spouse of former leader of the opposition Mahendra Karma, who was killed in the deadly Maoist ambush in Bastar on May 25 in 2013.Congress sources said the party has put on hold for few days the names of its candidates to be fielded from Khairagrah, Dongergarh, Rajnandgaon, Dongergaon, Khijji and Mohala-Manpur and this list of candidates is expected in a couple of days. Indications are that Congress wants to announce the name of its candidate for Rajnandgaon seat, which at present is being represented by chief minister Raman Singh, at the last moment.As of now, a high profile contest is expected in Rajnandgaon constituency as regional party Janata Congress leader and former chief minister Ajit Jogi had already announced that he would contest against chief minister Raman Singh on his home turf. However, Congress is waiting for BJP’s move in Rajnandgaon amid hush-hush talks in political circles about the possibility of chief minister Raman Singh considering shifting his constituency. Indications are that Congress could wait till the BJP releases its list of candidates for the first phase before finalising the names.
