Chhattisgarh assembly elections: 15% polling recorded in Bastar, Rajnandgaon in early hours

Bhejji 1 polling station, where only one vote was casted in 2013, has witnessed polling by 72 voters till now. RAIPUR: Nearly 15 per cent polling was recorded in first few hours in the first phase of elections in 18 constituencies in Maoist affected Bastar and Rajnandgaon on Monday morning. "Polling time in 10 constituencies -- Mohla-Manpur, Antagarh, Bhanupratappur, Kanker, Keshkal, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur and Konta -- is from 7 am to 3 pm.In the remaining eight constituencies -- Khairgarh, Dongargarh, Rajnandgaon, Dongargaon, Khujji, Bastar, Jagdalpur and Chitrakot -- voting will be held from 8am till 5pm. According to information, polling at 53 booths was delayed by more than an hour in Bastar and Rajnandgaon districts.Electoral officers though defended that there was fault in cable wires which were rectified and there were machines for back up if required.Moreover, in the interiors of Sukma district , voters were coming out in large number despite Maoists' call for poll boycott.Sukma SP Abhishek Meena said, "The Bhejji 2 and Gorkha polling booths that recorded zero polling in 2013 elections witnessed casting of votes by 11 and 20 persons respectively. Chhattisgarh election commission officers said that polling in Bastar and Rajnandgaon went smooth till 11.15 am and so far 15 per cent polling has been registered.Voting was delayed in some booths due to glitches in EVMsAmid complaints of technical snag in EVMs and delay in polling at many places in both the districts, election commission officer said that 31 EVMs and 51 VVPAT machines were replaced after faults were reported but the polling was going peaceful and smoothly.Technical issues with EVMs were reported from polling stations of Bastar, Kanker, Bijapur and voters also had to return without exercising their franchise at many polling booths.
