Come December 11, if your pet poops on the road, clean it or else pay a fine.Intensifying its Swachh drive, Raipur Municipal Corporation has decided to impose a fine to prevent pet littering in public places. This is the first time such a fine will be implemented. This comes on the heels of the RMC drive against public urination, and is a welcome move.The rule is yet to be passed in Mayor-in-Council (MIC) and will be implemented after getting ratified in the general body discussion soon after December 11.Speaking to TOI, an official said, "It is very embarrassing to see the city's low rank in sanitation work, hence various initiatives have been taken up by the civic body to change the resident's approach. There are laws pertaining to responsible disposal of animal faeces in India, so bylaws will be formed to implement the ban on pet's open defecation after the termination of code of conduct on December 11." The fine amount is yet to be decided."Residents take their pets out to defecate and urinate on the roads. The residents will have to train their pets to either defecate inside their home or they will have to clean the poop as in done in many cities in India and abroad."Joint effort of pet owners, resident welfare associations is needed to make this drive a success, said the official.Before the order is implemented, the corporations will spread awareness on the issue. The civic body aims to sensitise people on the importance of keeping the roads free of pet litter rather than impose fines, said an official.
