RAIPUR: In yet another case, a woman who was branded a ' witch ' (tonhi) was murdered by her son in Mungeli district. The couple was arrested and further probe is underway.Recently, a youth in Korba was arrested in cannibalistic act of murdering his mother over similar accusations. Villagers told police that Dayashanakar used to harass his mother frequently by locking her in a room for days and wouldn't give her food or water. Suspecting his involvement, police interrogated him during which he confessed to having killed his mother. The accused stuffed the body in a sack to bury it in the backyard of his house.The incident came to light when it had been more than 10 days that she went missing.

Police nabbed the accused son and his wife for murder Rajkumar Verma of Kanharpur village of Pathariya in Mungeli approached the police on January 4 to lodge a missing person complaint about his mother-in-law Jagbai, 65, who he said was missing for more than a week.During investigation, police found that the woman's son Dayashankar was changing his statement and was trying to mislead the police. Suspecting his involvement, police interrogated him during which he confessed to having killed his mother. His wife supported him in the act, he said. He said that he committed the act as he was sure that his mother was a witch and was responsible for his father's death.Police said the accused used to often threaten his mother of kicking her out of the house and call her 'tonhi', neighbours said. Villagers told police that Dayashanakar used to harass his mother frequently by locking her in a room for days and wouldn't give her food or water. Whenever his wife used to fall ill, he would accuse her of indulging in 'black-magic' against his wife.He also confessed to strangulating the woman to death, stuffing her body into a sack and burying her in the backyard of house.Whenever inquired by others about the woman, he would say that she had gone to her sister's place. But when her son-in-law went searching for her, he could not find her and reported to police.Police went to the spot and retrieved her decayed body from the spot. The couple was arrested and further probe is underway.Recently, a youth in Korba was arrested in cannibalistic act of murdering his mother over similar accusations.
