Sukhram Singh, a constable with the Special Task Force, was among the 22 jawans martyred in the April 3 ambush by Maoists in Tekulguda region of Bastar.
Hundreds turned up for the funeral in the little hamlet of Mohda in Gariaband district, over 550km from the killing fields of Tarrem where Sukhram was martyred. Wails rent the air when the soldier’s coffin was carried into the village. His father, chest heaving with grief, carried Sukhram’s infant son in his arms as he performed the last rites.
Sukhram was married for less than 18 months and would tell his wife over phone from Bijapur how he longed to hold his little son in his arms, Fagguram said. “I don`t know how to face his wife. She is falling unconscious ever since we heard the terrible news,” he mumbled.
Sinking into a chair, he stared at the horizon and said: “I am proud of my son. I salute his sacrifice…” And broke into sobs. In Maoist-hit Kanker’s Pandripani village, the coffin bearing the name of DRG personnel Ramesh Kumar Jurri lay on the ground as his four-year-old son watched and asked, “What’s inside?” He was cremated in the backyard of the house, where his wife and mother lay senseless from crying.
Her mother had recently gone to Jagdalpur to seek a transfer for Jurri, but in vain. She got to know of his death on TV, said a relative. In Banjugni village of Kondagaon, some 300km from Tekulguda, Paramshila, the wife of martyr Ramdas Korram, sat in front of pictures of gods and goddesses, lighting diyas and praying to deities to “convert news of his death to false”.
