Extensive drive launched to prevent human-elephant conflict in Katghora division By Abhishek Kumar KATGHORA/RAIPUR IN response to a recent tragic incident where three women lost their lives due to encounters with wild elephants in the Katghora forest division of Korba district forest officials have initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign to address the ongoing human-elephant conflict in the area. Kumar Nishant a dedicated 2016 batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer who recently assumed the role of Katghora Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) has been leading the charge in this critical endeavor. Under his leadership Forest Department personnel have been actively engaging with villagers even during night time to educate them about the importance of forest and wildlife conservation in reducing human-elephant conflicts. To enhance safety for villagers living in elephant-affected areas torches were distributed by the Forest and Climate Change Department of the Government of Chhattisgarh. Furthermore Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) Bilaspur Circle Rajesh Chandel personally visited these villages to interact with residents and assure them that their concerns are being addressed urgently. DFO Kumar Nishant emphasised the importance of protecting elephants and curbing wildlife crime. The Forest Department is deeply concerned about the human-elephant conflict and has taken proactive measures to mitigate this menace. To monitor the movements of wild elephants in the forested regions the Forest Department has implemented two mobile applications namely the Sajag app and the elephant tracking app. Villagers in elephant affected areas are encouraged to download both apps to stay informed about the presence of wild elephants in Katghora forest division. Sajag alarms have also been installed in 31 villages to alert residents when elephants are nearby. The ongoing conflict has resulted in damage to crops and makeshift houses in the forested areas. To address this the Forest Department is providing compensation to affected villagers. Additionally solar fencing is being installed around vulnerable makeshift houses to deter elephants from encroaching further into these areas. Villagers are being advised to temporarily vacate their homes in sensitive zones to ensure their safety. In a gesture of compassion the Forest Department has provided compensation to the families of the victims who tragically lost their lives to elephant encounters. This effort reflects the departments commitment to supporting affected communities during these challenging times. It is essential to note that two women lost their lives when a wild elephant encountered them at the Chotia mines dumping site while another woman met a similar fate at a different location within the forest division all within a few days of each other. The Forest Departments proactive measures aim to prevent such tragic incidents in the future and foster coexistence between humans and elephants in the region.
