Rising heart attack deaths in CG alarming By Amlan Sinha Bhilai In a concerning trend heart attacks have emerged as the leading cause of registered deaths from ailments across Chhattisgarh in recent years. The data for the fiscal year 2022-23 paints a worrisome picture with approximately 30% of the total deaths in the state attributed to heart attacks. This figure marks a substantial 21% increase compared to the previous year highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. According to reports from the Indian Council of Medical Research under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare heart attacks accounted for a staggering 30.2% of the 1.34 lakh registered deaths in the state due to various diseases during the 2022-23 period. This places heart attacks at the forefront overshadowing ailments like tuberculosis (6.2%) cancer (6.15%) kidney problems (3.2%) vector-borne diseases (2.9%) paralysis (2.1%) water-borne diseases (2.1%) and others. Analyzing the distribution further urban areas witnessed heart attack-related deaths contributing to 35% of the total deaths caused by diseases. In contrast rural areas saw heart attacks accounting for 26% of the total disease-related deaths in the same period. The data also sheds light on gender and age-related trends. Men between the ages of 25 and 50 years are increasingly susceptible to heart attacks while women aged 35 to 55 years face a higher risk of cardiac arrest. The concerning observation is that even individuals as young as 18 to 25 years are falling victim to heart attacks in certain regions. Experts point to several underlying factors contributing to this surge in cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension diabetes sedentary lifestyles lack of exercise high cholesterol obesity workplace and home-related stress as well as habits like alcohol consumption drug use and smoking have been identified as culprits. In a surprising revelation high doses of medicines used to treat coronavirus infections have also been linked to cardiac issues and subsequent fatalities. Medical professionals emphasize the importance of caution when taking medications and advise seeking professional consultation before doing so. Dr K Gurunath a well-known cardiologist urges individuals to prioritise exercise manage stress effectively and avoid self-medication to safeguard their heart health. His insights underline the critical need for awareness and proactive measures to address the rising prevalence of heart ailments particularly among younger age groups. Adding to the concern is the evident shift towards heart ailments affecting rural areas. The growing stress levels among the rural population are believed to be contributing to the surge in heartrelated problems. This unsettling trend necessitates immediate attention from healthcare authorities policymakers and the public alike.
