This figure marks a substantial 21% increase compared to the previous year highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. According to reports from the Indian Council of Medical Research under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare heart attacks accounted for a staggering 30.2% of the 1.34 lakh registered deaths in the state due to various diseases during the 2022-23 period. This places heart attacks at the forefront overshadowing ailments like tuberculosis (6.2%) cancer (6.15%) kidney problems (3.2%) vector-borne diseases (2.9%) paralysis (2.1%) water-borne diseases (2.1%) and others. Analyzing the distribution further urban areas witnessed heart attack-related deaths contributing to 35% of the total deaths caused by diseases. In contrast rural areas saw heart attacks accounting for 26% of the total disease-related deaths in the same period. The data also sheds light on gender and age-related trends. Men between the ages of 25 and 50 years are increasingly susceptible to heart attacks while women aged 35 to 55 years face a higher risk of cardiac arrest. The concerning observation is that even individuals as young as 18 to 25 years are falling victim to heart attacks in certain regions. Experts point to several underlying factors contributing to this surge in cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension diabetes sedentary lifestyles lack of exercise high cholesterol obesity workplace and home-related stress as well as habits like alcohol consumption drug use and smoking have been identified as culprits. In a surprising revelation high doses of medicines used to treat coronavirus infections have also been linked to cardiac issues and subsequent fatalities.
