Fire on premises: Mock drill makes hoteliers battle-ready

RAIPUR: The Raipur Municipal Corporation organised a mock drill for the hoteliers on Wednesday, to help them tackle any eventuality on their premises by using fire-fighting equipment. The hoteliers were instructed to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of fire-fighting systems in their hotels. During the drill, the experts said that in critical situation, evacuation must be carried out in a calm and orderly manner. For this, they advised to pitch in with man power and upgrade fire-safety kits - appliances, alarm systems, sprinklers, fire pumps and protection equipment - in their hotels. The instructors also suggested the hoteliers to paste contact numbers of the hotel authorities for the guests in case of a fire.The hoteliers were told to indicate nearest safe exit on each floor of the hotels.

It was besides the inspection drive carried out to check fire safety and fire-fighting systems in hotels.To recall, over 200 vehicles were gutted in a fire at a parking lot near the Raipur Railway Station on April 9 while five people were charred to death in a blaze suspected to be triggered by a short circuit at Tulsi lodge located at Rahmania Chowk in the city during the wee hours of April 10.As per information, around 25 hoteliers turned up at the fire-safety session conducted by the Fire Brigade and Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited in association with RMC.The instructors gave demonstration on how to address fire accidents and draw emergency evacuation plan and exit routes. The experts explained the rescue methods and services to be implemented. The hoteliers were instructed to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of fire-fighting systems in their hotels. During the drill, the experts said that in critical situation, evacuation must be carried out in a calm and orderly manner. The officials said that lack of security and alertness leads to loss of lives and property on account of panic that results in stampede.Hence, the owners must be ready with a pre-determined and practised plan of action to save their customers. For this, they advised to pitch in with man power and upgrade fire-safety kits - appliances, alarm systems, sprinklers, fire pumps and protection equipment - in their hotels. The instructors also suggested the hoteliers to paste contact numbers of the hotel authorities for the guests in case of a fire.The hoteliers were told to indicate nearest safe exit on each floor of the hotels. RMC's Zone 2 Commissioner RK Dongre said that on the instructions of RMC Commissioner Rajat Bansal , a fire-safety demonstration was conducted on a hotel premises wherein a detailed description of fire scenes and how to address the crises were explained to the hoteliers.
