Ragged or depressed due to marks, MBBS student attempts suicide in Bastar

RAIPUR: Driven to desperation after being allegedly ragged or due to average results in first semester, a 19-year-old MBBS first year student of Dimrapal Medical College Girls' Hostel in Jagdalpur in Bastar district attempts suicide by gulping down 22 pills of Cetirizine medicine on intervening night of Saturday. Though College's anti-ragging committee has no information in this regards.According to information, the medical student was disturbed after a party and she returned to her room around 12 am. However, sources said that the police wasn't allowed to record girl's statement or speak to her in person, college dean, superintendent and others were present while the girl narrated her ordeal. Although the first year student of 2016 batch of MBBS at Dimrapal Medical College in her statement to police said that she was under extreme pressure of studies and despite being a good student, scored average marks in first semester.But the statement doesn't go down well as the sources at medical college alleged that the girl was being ragged and harassed by senior girls in hostel. Almost echoing the claim, Jagdalpur SP Arif Sheikh told TOI that he too received a call from Ministry of Human Resource Development 's anti-ragging call centre that the survivor attempted suicide because of excessive ragging.

"The girl however, denied the case of ragging in her statement, further investigation and interrogation would reveal the truth," SP Sheikh said.Sources said that the students of Medical College were being harassed on regular basis for past two days and one of the students have reported to the HRD's anti-ragging call centre. Though College's anti-ragging committee has no information in this regards.According to information, the medical student was disturbed after a party and she returned to her room around 12 am. In her statement she said that she woke up around 1.30 am and swallowed 22 tablets of Cetirizine after which she started vomiting.Meanwhile, when her roommate saw her condition she swiftly informed the hostel management and the girl was rushed to ICU ward of Medical College.It was around 11 am when Parpa woman police came to record her statement when the girl said that she was depressed as she scored less marks in first semester. However, sources said that the police wasn't allowed to record girl's statement or speak to her in person, college dean, superintendent and others were present while the girl narrated her ordeal. Her condition is stated to be stable.
