Bastar SP bags second international award for community policing in a row

Sheikh has been conferred with this award in 2016 as well during his tenure as Balod SP, for his unique initiative in community policing Posted as Bastar SP in March, Sheikh along with his team in Bastar district decided to unleash a new dimension of community policing through a campaign titled Amcho Bastar Amcho Police (ABAP). RAIPUR: Adding yet another feather to his cap, Bastar SP Arif Sheikh would receive International Association of Culinary Professionals award (the Oscars of community policing) in the 'Homeland Security' category for his campaign 'Amcho Bastar, Amcho Police' that focuses on rehabilitation of children affected by Left Wing Extremism and neutralizing Maoists. The award ceremony will be held in Philadelphia, US on October 24. In tandem there was a coherent and active social media presence to reach out to maximum stake holders.Approaching the remotest regions in Bastar, Sheikh hosted several programmes to reach out to maximum population and interacted with them boosting their self-confidence and feeling of safety.ABAP is a partnership programme between police and community at large to scan key problems of people who are naturally shy, scared and reserved. Taking help of NGOs, we build friendly relations with locals via mobile police stations, during weekly markets and fairs, he said.ABAP has brought police and people together to create an environment of safety and security in the areas affected with Left Wing Extremism (LWE) and acted catalyst to create basic infrastructure for development and well being of the people in the LWE-affected areas.It also encourages the LWE Maoists and their sympathizers to surrender and join mainstream.

Being led by Bastar SP Arif Sheikh and DIG Dantewada range P Sundarraj, the police are bringing about change in the attitude of people towards police and their own safety.Under the banner of this campaign, Bastar police have rescued few children from Bal Sangham of Maoists who were used to plant IEDs against security personnel, they were counselled and sent for rehabilitation for skill development and studies amid initial resistance from the kids.Talking to TOI, Sheikh said that the ABAP initiative was nurtured and diversified since last five months by exploring into new areas by neutralising top Maoist cadres.
