RAIPUR: Amid India boasting of Swachch Bharat campaign reaching remotest villages, girls at an overcrowded tribal hostel at Chhattisgarh 's oldest Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University in state capital, are forced to bath in open in absence of water supply and roofless washroom. The girls have been bathing out at the garden of hostel premises as the only functional toilet out of three doesn't have water supply and other doesn't have roof or are choked. The matter came to fore when girls contacted Congress Rajya Sabha member Chhaya Verma and party spokesperson Vikas Tiwari who visited the hostel on Saturday. When contacted, a girl student told TOI that bathing in open makes us vulnerable as the varsity is too big and continuously witnesses movement of people including labourers, teachers and students."We are left with no option, anyone can video record and circulate the clippings of girls taking bath in open. This is so embarrassing. Water shortage issue is prevailing since more than a month. We tie up a petticoat and bath outside while we carry buckets to toilets in morning. The three wardens Sushila Purena, Maya Pagare, Basanti Tirkey don't pay heed to our problems either," the girl who doesn't wish to be named. Moreover, hundreds of girls pursuing BSc, post-graduation and PhD are residing at tribal hostel having three buildings without any of the three wardens present on premises, even during night."Many girls suffer from health problems and are in need for medical treatment but when we call up the warden, they never come for help and make excuses," the girl revealed.Tribal welfare minister Kedar Kashyap wasn't available for comments, however, RK Cidar, assistant commissioner tribal welfare department took cognizance of the issue after TOI contacted him and he said, "I wasn't aware about the problems girls were facing, I would personally visit the hostel and fix things right away."Talking to TOI, Chhaya Verma said, "The Scheduled Tribe Hostel with capacity of 150 girls was found overcrowded with 300 girls residing in it along with six staff members as caretakers. The girls complained that they have to bath in open outside at garden where there are two taps for water supply. As they have to go for classes around 9 am, the water supply is available only for few hours after 1 pm when all the girls are out for classes."Moreover, it was found that the food for girls was cooked in unhygienic condition in indigenous way using wood and during summers, girls have to arrange for coolers by themselves.Condemning the mismanagement in tribal hostel, the Rajya Sabha member demanded that minister for tribal welfare Kedar Kashyap should visit the hostel personally and look for the shortcomings to mend them all right from facilitating them proper washrooms with water supply at first place.None of the wardens were available for comment while one of them claimed that they had taken up the issue but to no avail.
