Screens to scream about traffic chaos on roads

RAJKOT: Citizens will soon get real-time information about the routes to be avoided or those that can be taken when they are driving in the city.The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) plans to install screens at 15 busiest and highly congested junctions to guide commuters towards roads with lesser traffic. The civic body plans to purchase screens, cameras and software for this project that will cost Rs 100 crore. It will also give indication of accidents on roads.RMC plans to install 15 such big screens on KKV Chowk and Kotecha Chowk on Kalavad road, Mahila College underbridge, Nana Mauva Circle, Greenland Circle, near Cosmoplex Theater off Ring Road-2, Trikon Baug, Yagnik Road, Hospital Chowk and Kisanpara Circle.Corporation commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani said, “The software will help count the heads as well as the number of vehicles on a particular road with the help of cameras. If the headcount and vehicles are more than certain numbers pre-fed in the software according to the road, it will indicate traffic jam on the screen.” The whole system will be driven by Geographical Information System (GIF).RMC also plans to implement integrated traffic management system for signals and smooth vehicular movement in the city.
