Flood alert in three Saurashtra districts

Rajkot: Coastal districts of Saurashtra continued to reel under severe wet spell as torrential rains pounded the region on Friday. The state government issued a flood alert in Visavadar, Bhesan Mendarada and Maliya-Hatina in Jungadh district , Sutrapada and Kodinar in Gir Somnath district and Jamkandorana in Rajkot district.The districts of Gir Somnath, Junagadh, Rajkot, Amreli, Bhavnagar and Botad experienced heavy downpours with Kodinar in Gir Somnath getting maximum rainfall of 180 mm till Friday evening. Following the heavy rains, the state government issued a red alert in Visavadar, Bhesan, Mendarada and Maliya-Hatina in Jungadh district, Sutrapada and Kodinar in Gir Somnath district and Jamkandorana in Rajkot district.All major rivers in the region were in spate and dams and ponds were overflowing in these districts. In Jungadh city, Ojat river was turbulently flowing bank to bank. Around 150 slum dwellers had to be evacuated and shifted to a government school in Shapar-Veraval industrial area on Rajkot’s outskirts after their huts got submerged.Electricity was snapped in 24 villages of Junagadh, Gir-Somnath, Amreli and Rajkot districts and as electric poles got uprooted, according to Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL).

Wellington Dam and Anandpur Dam on the outskirts of Junagadh were overflowing as also Narsinh Mehta pond and Damodar Kund.In Rajkot district, one of gates of the overflowing Motisar Dam in Gondal taluka developed a leakage forcing the irrigation department officials to rush and start the repair work. Around 150 slum dwellers had to be evacuated and shifted to a government school in Shapar-Veraval industrial area on Rajkot’s outskirts after their huts got submerged.Electricity was snapped in 24 villages of Junagadh, Gir-Somnath, Amreli and Rajkot districts and as electric poles got uprooted, according to Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL).
