Rain fury batters coastal Saurashtra, hundreds stranded

These talukas are Gir-Gadhada, Una, Jafrabad, Rajula, Mahuva and Talaja talukas where heavy rain coupled with high tide in the sea kept people on the edge.The three districts have been receiving rainfall for the last seven days. Around 35 people were trapped in Dharabandar village of Jafrabad. Around 10 villages were completely cut off due to heavy flooding.

Rajkot/Surat: Flood-like situation prevailed in three coastal districts of Saurashtra even as continuous downpour claimed two lives in Bhavnagar district since Sunday night.Around 150 people were stranded in several villages of six worst-hit talukas of Gir-Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts while NDRF teams rescued nearly 70 passengers of the Delvada-Veraval metre gauge line held up due to waterlogging at Gir-Gadhada railway station.Of the 11 people, who got buried when a residential building collapsed in Sendarda village on Sunday, body of one was recovered on Monday. One person also drowned in a drain in Longdi village of Mahuva taluka. A youth identified as Haresh Pandya was swept away in Loyanga village of Mahuva taluka on Sunday night.At least 26 persons stranded in flood waters in Shokada village of Jafrabad taluka were rescued by the district officials with the help of fire fighters from local municipality.Situation was grim in six talukas of the worst-hit Gir-Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts with nearly 150 people stranded in various villages. Around 10 villages were completely cut off due to heavy flooding. These talukas are Gir-Gadhada, Una, Jafrabad, Rajula, Mahuva and Talaja talukas where heavy rain coupled with high tide in the sea kept people on the edge.The three districts have been receiving rainfall for the last seven days. Nearly 80 people are trapped in three villages of Gir Gadhada and Una talukas named Kanakia, Kareni and Sanvav.Five state highways including Una-Diu were closed due to heavy waterlogging and 124 village roads are also closed for traffic.Two school buses were stuck and 120 children stranded between Gir-Gadhada and Dhokalva villages were shifted to the nearest school by district administration as the driver saw the swelling water on the roads refrained from taking the risk by driving further.In Amreli district, Rajula and Jafrabad talukas were inundated due to heavy rain as all the rivers are in spate. Around 35 people were trapped in Dharabandar village of Jafrabad. Amreli collector Oak Ayush Sanjeev told TOI: “Due to high tide in sea, the rain water is not receding. Our team is working to rescue the people and we issued high alert for two villages of Rajula taluka.” Vadher village of Jafrabad taluka has been evacuated completely as flood waters gushed into several houses up to five foot.A private bus was stuck on the bridge over Navlakha river in Babariyadhar village of Rajula taluka. The locals formed a human chain and rescued 35 passengers using a rope.In Bhavnagar, four people were trapped in Valar village of Talaja while 30 in Samdhiyali Pati village of Mahuva taluka as Bagad dam was overflowing.Bhavnagar district collector Harshad Patel said: “We are trying to rescue the 30 people with the help of a boat. An NDRF team has joined the rescue operation.”
