Rajkot: A 30-year-old man , who had immolated himself in Sihor police station due to alleged harassment by a bootlegger, succumbed to the severe burns in Bhavnagar’s Sir T Hospital on Monday.On Sunday night, Girish Baraiya, a Dalit, reached the first floor of the police station in Sihor with a bottle full of kerosene and set himself ablaze.According to police, Baraiya, a resident of Ekta Society in the town, had been receiving threats allegedly from bootlegger Jayesh Bhanaji, who was involved in liquor trafficking along with Prakash Makwana. On September 13, a total of 1,452 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor worth Rs 3.35 lakh, was seized from the society. During police investigation, it was revealed that the liquor cache belonged to Makwana.“Suspecting him to have tipped of police about the liquor stock, Bhanaji started threatening Baraiya and told him that he would have to pay for the losses. Bhanaji had also allegedly tried to extort money from him for the loss,” said MH Raolji, Sihor police station inspector.Baraiya worked as a compounder at a private doctor’s clinic in Sihor.Meanwhile, no arrest has been made in the case as Baraiya’s family members are yet to lodge an official complaint. The family members took Baraiya’s body for cremation on Monday.
