Makeover in the works for Race Course Ring Rd

Rajkot: The ring road around the Race Course ground Rajkot city’s favourite hangout place , is set to get a major makeover after nearly a decade.The 2,500-metre ring road around the Race Course ground connects many part of the city like Airport Road, Kalavad Road, Raiya Road, Jamnagar Road, Para Bazar, Yagnik Road and Jubeli Garden.Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has come out with the beautification plan of the ring road and claims that the project will be a model for other municipal corporations.The entire work will be carried out on public-private partnership (PPP) model. The firm entrusted with the beautification work will pay a premium of Rs 2.51 lakh per annum to RMC, which will be increased by 10% every year.Currently, there are 1,600 plants in earthen pots on the divider along the ring road. New, decorative dividers will be constructed on the road which will be 1.2-metre wide and one metre in height.RMC city engineer traffic and transport department, K S Gohel said, “The current pots with plants are more than 10 years old and some of them are damaged.

There are nearly 80 streetlight poles along the periphery of the Race Course.Under the new beautification plan, the private firm, which will be contracted for the beautification work will be allowed to advertise in the space between the two poles.It will also be able to put kiosks between the light poles, but 20% of the kiosk will be reserved for RMC to advertise its own schemes. The firm entrusted with the beautification work will pay a premium of Rs 2.51 lakh per annum to RMC, which will be increased by 10% every year.Currently, there are 1,600 plants in earthen pots on the divider along the ring road. We are hoping to complete the beautification by the end of December.”Sculptures on various themes depicting the glory of Saurashtra will also be put up along the ring road.“RMC will contract the firm for five years and after that RMC will review the work and if it is satisfactory the contract will be renewed,” Gohel said.
