Rajkot: Within two days the police cracked the murder case of a 75-year-old woman, whose body was being taken for cremation. The police took the possession of the body and also arrested her two nephews for the crime on Friday. As suspected, the motive behind the crime turned out to be a land dispute. The accused, identified as Dinesh Jatwada and his brother Jairaj Jatwada, allegedly strangled Mani Khachar at her house in Halmatiya Golida village near Rajkot on Wednesday.“While Khachar was sitting on a cot outside her house, Dinesh approached her from behind and strangled her with a rope. On Thursday morning, the duo arrived at her house and took her body for cremation. Besides murder, we have also booked them for destruction of evidence,” Aji Dam police station inspector P N Vaghela said. The police swung into action after they received a call from an anonymous person who said that Khachar did not die a natural death and rushed to the crematorium, where preparations to cremate Khachar were underway.Later, during the probe, it was found that the caller was none other than Umed Jatwada, elder brother of the accused duo. After murdering Khachar, the accused went to Umed and confessed to their crime. Hence, Umed informed the police and also Shivku Sonara (40). Khachar was the great maternal aunt of Sonara, who then formally lodged a complaint against the Jatwada brothers.During his questioning, Umed told the cops that his brothers had killed Khachar as she had refused to let them have 19 bigha land which she possessed for cultivation.“Umed said that his brothers told him that they had time and again asked Khachar to give them the land, but she would stoutly refuse. Instead of giving them the land, she had lent the land to cow grazers. The Jatwada brothers fought with Khachar and their relation with her became embittered, eventually leading to her murder,” explained Vaghela. The Jatwada brothers told Umed that they intended to dispose of Khachar’s body by cremating her and asked him to call Khachar’s relatives to take part in the cremation. However, their plot was foiled by Umed, who informed the cops and Sonara.Khachar owned some 13 acre of land, whose estimate runs into crores of rupees. Her bank balance was also huge. Her husband had died a long time ago and she had no children. Of the accused, Dinesh has earlier gone to jail under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA) in a physical assault case.
