Panel: Ban livestock export from Tuna at Rajkot

RAJKOT: A three-person committee comprising members of animal welfare board has recommended that the export of livestock from Tuna port should be completely banned. It submitted a report based on its visit to the Tuna port on October 9. Rajendra Shah said, “Rules regarding transportation of animals to this port, condition of vehicles and others are not followed.”The livestock export from Tuna had stopped ahead of Eid following directions of Kutch collector after a panel reported violation of animal cruelty rules. They have expressed the opinion to the concerned ministry and submitted a report to the Prime Minister’s Office saying that export of livestock from Tuna port is not viable.Interestingly, livestock is being exported from Tuna port for the last nine decades.The report said livestock export was being done under violation of Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act rules, Central Motor Vehicle Act and Animal Health Terrestrial code. This panel was formed after state governme-nt received complaints about the cruelty being committed on animals.

The committee claimed that all rules related to animal export are being flagrantly violated.The committee comprised of Kamlesh Shah from Mumbai who is a member of Animal Welfare Board of India working under ministry of environment, forests and climate change and state welfare board members Rajendra Shah and Mittal Khetani from Rajkot. They have expressed the opinion to the concerned ministry and submitted a report to the Prime Minister’s Office saying that export of livestock from Tuna port is not viable.Interestingly, livestock is being exported from Tuna port for the last nine decades.The report said livestock export was being done under violation of Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act rules, Central Motor Vehicle Act and Animal Health Terrestrial code. “We feel that this is very painful destruction of our cultural heritage and national wealth,” the committee claimed. Rajendra Shah said, “Rules regarding transportation of animals to this port, condition of vehicles and others are not followed.”The livestock export from Tuna had stopped ahead of Eid following directions of Kutch collector after a panel reported violation of animal cruelty rules. This panel was formed after state governme-nt received complaints about the cruelty being committed on animals. The exporters approached Gujarat HC whi-ch has stayed the district collector’s order and allowed exports subject to following rules and regulation. However, after August, no consignment has been sent from Tuna.
