Rajkot: Rajkot rural police busted an opium cultivation racket from Kothi village near Jasdan and arrested farmer Deha Sasakia (52) on Friday night.The police also seized 522kg opium poppy plants valued at Rs 2.61 lakh from Sasakia’s farm and booked him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.The opium poppy plants were cultivated among cotton plants. The cotton plants were found in the periphery of the farm.According to police, Sasakia used to consume opium himself and sold it to people of nearby villages. The raid was conducted following specific information about opium cultivation.Special Operation Group (SOG) inspector M N Rana said, “We have handed over the case to the local police. They will interrogate the accused and find the buyers of the contraband.”
