IPL 2021: Saurashtra`s Chetan Sakariya, who overcame his brothers` suicide to play IPL

Rajasthan Royals left-arm fast bowler Chetan Sakariya made his debut on Monday in Rajasthan Royals`(RR) opening IPL match against Punjab Kings (PBKS). Playing his first IPL match, Sakariya took three big wickets of Mayank Agarwal, captain KL Rahul and Richardson.

Sakariya performed brilliantly in this debut match as he took three wickets for 31 runs in four overs with an impressive economy of 7.75. Apart from this, he took a sensational flying catch of Nicholas Puran.

Sakariya performed very well in domestic cricket for the Saurashtra cricket team. He also played under-19 cricket before playing for the senior team of Saurashtra. The left-hander has played 15 first-class, seven List-A and 16 T20 matches so far in his domestic career. On Monday, Rajasthan Royals gave a chance to young Chetan Sakariya in place of senior paceman Jaydev Unadkat against Punjab Kings at Wankhede Stadium.

Playing his first IPL match, Sakariya took three big wickets of Mayank Agarwal in his second over then captain KL Rahul and Richardson in the final over of the game.

Sakariya`s journey to reach here was extremely difficult from the very beginning, Chetan and his family witnessed a financial crisis, but Chetan did not let anything stop him from achieving his dreams.

His father did not have the money to buy a TV. Kanjibhai, a tempo driver, did not like his son to play cricket. He considered it as a game of the rich.

Chetan`s younger brother Rahul committed suicide in January this year. Chetan Sakariya was playing in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy at the time, and he knew nothing about it. At the same time, when Chetan came back home, his family members told him about it several days later.

Chetan Sakariya was born on 28 February 1998 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. He plays for Saurashtra in domestic cricket.
Rajasthan Royals signed him in for 1.2 crore rupees.
