Rajkot turns fortress for PM’s visit

Rajkot: A thick security blanket has been thrown around Rajkot city where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is schedule to arrive on June 29, his first visit to the city after assuming the country's top post in 2014.Besides 60 special protection group (SPG) commandos, three inspector generals of police (IGPs) - Hasmukh Patel, Rajkumar Pandian and Shashikant Trivedi will supervise the security arrangements in the city. He is slated to address a public meeting at the dam after a formal function to welcome Narmada waters through SAUNI yojna.On Tuesday, junior home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja, director general of police (DGP) Geetha Johri and other senior police officials reviewed the security arrangements.The police commissioner also issued a notification banning parking of vehicles on all the routes where Modi would travelling. As many as 27 IPS officers will be deployed in the city along with 65 deputy superintendents of police, 50 police inspectors, 500 police sub inspectors and 15 companies of state reserve police force (SRP).They will guard the routes from airport to Race Course ground where he will distribute kits to the physically challenged persons.Modi will begin his one-day visit to the city with a road show on the 12 km route from airport to Aji dam.

The traffic has been diverted from seven major roads.As many as 18430 Divyangs will be distributed aids and assistive devices at Race Course, making it the biggest ever camp in the country in terms of beneficiaries.Earlier, the department of empowerment of persons with disabilities had held similar camps at Varanasi, Navsari and Vadodara in 2016, wherein 10,000, 11,000 and 8,000 beneficiaries respectively were given such kits.Of the 18,430 beneficiaries, 10100 will given 14,828 appliances at an estimated cost of Rs. 5.60 crores and 5,330 assessed by National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan) (NIEPID), Secundarabad will be given TLM kits.
