NCW, Facebook and CPF join hands for online safety of women

RANCHI: Jharkhand based Cyber Peace Foundation (CPF) in collaboration with Facebook and National Commission for Women (NCW) launched digital literacy and awareness campaign for girls above 18 and women in seven states of the country. The module has been developed by Facebook along with safety experts, academic researchers, NGOs, human rights activists and policymakers over the years. “National Commission for Women gave us the opportunity to come together for serving a bigger and vulnerable population,” he said. They will adopt a Training of Trainers (ToT) model and these fully-trained master trainers will then conduct the trainings. The states in first phase include national capital region of Delhi, Manipur, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Haryana and Tamil Nadu.

The official announcement was made by NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma in a Facebook live interaction with its policy programme manager, India Shruti Moghe on Wednesday.The programme aims at training around 60,000 women across various universities in seven states of the country for safe and secure use of internet. The states in first phase include national capital region of Delhi, Manipur, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Haryana and Tamil Nadu. In the second phase of the scheme states like Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh would also be covered.Talking to TOI Vineet Kumar founder president of CPF said that their organisation and Facebook were working on the same issue but separately. “National Commission for Women gave us the opportunity to come together for serving a bigger and vulnerable population,” he said. CPF would help design the curriculum and organise class room training session for master trainers who in turn would further disseminate the knowledge about safe and responsible use of the internet. Vineet said that the project is being funded by facebook along with supply of expertise and technical knowhow.NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma in a facebook live interaction with policy programme manager of facebook, India Shruti Moghe said that access to internet helps in women empowerment and unless they are aware of handling it properly they may land in trouble and in the trap of cyber frauds. “It is not just about cyber bullying and stalking, extortion and damage to business are certain new aspects of cybercrime from which women need to remain protected,” she said adding that the commission got as many as 255 complaints related to cybercrime last year and the number is ever increasing.Official sources in Facebook, India confirmed that they will work with Cyber Peace Foundation to conduct these trainings. They will adopt a Training of Trainers (ToT) model and these fully-trained master trainers will then conduct the trainings. Facebook will provide technical content and expertise for the Digital Literacy Program. The module has been developed by Facebook along with safety experts, academic researchers, NGOs, human rights activists and policymakers over the years.
