Working in one of the most dangerous professions, miners often turn to drinking to cope with the pressures of daily life and work.Ranjay Sinha, project officer of Kedla project under Charhi area of CCL in Ramgarh district, said, “Use of breathalysers as part of our safety precaution drive has proved beneficial as we have caught a number of workers trying to enter the mines after consuming liquor.”He added that mines are hypersensitive places in terms of safety. “We have coached our workers on the safety guidelines and have asked them to adhere by them but they do not seem to follow them. In order to gather irrefutable proof, the management has introduced breathalysers. Based on the breathalyser report, disciplinary action will be initiated against those found drunk,” said Sinha.Since the breathalysers have been introduced in several collieries under the Charhi area of CCL, the number of workers reporting to work in a state of inebriation has gone down drastically. “The workers are now aware that if they fail the breathalyser test, they will be disqualified from duty for the day,” the official added.
