Jharkhand government to recruit youths from rural areas as home guards

RANCHI: The state government has launched a drive to recruit as many as 8,000 home guards to strengthen its manpower and prevent rural youths from being lured by the Maoists. The enrolment process is at various stages in the districts.Director general (fire and home guards) B B Pradhan said, "The enrolment would provide source of livelihood to a large number of youths. "According to government directives, as many as 110 home guards are to be enrolled for a population of 25,000 in urban areas. Police officials said there is need for around 37,000 home guards in the state. This will effectively counter the move of the Maoists to provide monetary benefits to lure villagers into joining their organisation.

This will effectively counter the move of the Maoists to provide monetary benefits to lure villagers into joining their organisation."According to government directives, as many as 110 home guards are to be enrolled for a population of 25,000 in urban areas. In addition, 110 jawans are to be recruited for each blocks of the state. Police officials said there is need for around 37,000 home guards in the state."The recruitment drive, which covers the entire state, will benefit many youths from Maoist-affected areas," Pradhan said.Soon after joining as the chief of the home guard and fire services, Pradhan had issued an order to district authorities for the enrolment of home guards. He had asked the officials to complete the process by March 31, 2017. While several districts started the process, the drive was put on hold on the orders of the then chief secretary Rajbala Verma, citing the issue of reservation in jobs. However, chief minister Raghubar Das said that there was no bar in the enrolment process while attending the raising day of the home guards in December last.After the CM's green signal, the process was started afresh and around 3,000 home guards were hired from various districts in recent months.
