24,000 litres of liquor smuggled from Punjab, Haryana seized in state in less than a year

The seized whisky bottles, meant for sale in Haryana, was smuggled to Jharkhand.A week ago, Sonu Kumar was arrested from Bhadrakali Hotel in Hazaribag for possessing 382.27 litres of foreign liquor made in Haryana. RANCHI: Officials of the excise department arrested one Mohit Kumar Manjhi for possessing smuggled whiskey last week following a raid at Natraj Hotel in Rangamati locality. Yadav said, "The low manufacturing duty structure makes it viable for people from Haryana and Punjab to smuggle the liquor to Jharkhand, as they make huge profit even after including the transport costs. A massive drive will be launched very soon to nab those involved in the smuggling racket.

The seized whisky bottles, meant for sale in Haryana, was smuggled to Jharkhand.A week ago, Sonu Kumar was arrested from Bhadrakali Hotel in Hazaribag for possessing 382.27 litres of foreign liquor made in Haryana. In May, excise department officials seized 35 bottles, labelled 'for sale in Haryana' were seized from a house at Piska More in Ranchi.Excise department officials said liquor made 'for sale in Haryana and Punjab' are being smuggled to Jharkhand after the state government took over the sale of retail liquor.Between August 2017 -when the government took over the sale of liquor - and June this year, a total of 216 cases of smuggled liquor from Haryana and Punjab making its way to Jharkhand were reported in which 125 arrests were made. A total of 24,839.36 litres of foreign liquor, 822.5 litres of beer and 28.8 litres of country spirit were seized during several raids.While as many as 47 cases were reported from Ranchi (the highest in the state) Dhanbad reported 36 cases followed by 23 in Ramgarh and 19 in East Singhbhum.Excise commissioner Bhor Singh Yadav said, "We are conducting regular raids with the help of police against the illegal liquors being smuggled in the state. A massive drive will be launched very soon to nab those involved in the smuggling racket."A major reason behind liquor made in Punjab and Haryana being smuggled to Jharkhand is the low manufacturing duty in those states. Yadav said, "The low manufacturing duty structure makes it viable for people from Haryana and Punjab to smuggle the liquor to Jharkhand, as they make huge profit even after including the transport costs."Sources from the department informed that the smugglers are able to earn a minimum profit of Rs 40 on every bottle smuggled from Punjab or Haryana to Jharkhand.However, Yadav said that while most of the liquor is actually made in Haryana and Punjab, there are cases where the liquor is made locally or in neighbouring states and the label of 'for sale in Haryana' is pasted on the bottles.
