Ranchi: The drinking water and sanitation department directed its executive and superintendent engineers across all the 24 districts to set up control rooms at circle and block levels to receive complaints of water woes during summer. These offices will begin operations from Thursday and will remain open from 8am to 8pm on all days of week. A separate toll-free number (18003456502) and a mobile number (9470176901) have also been generated for people to register their complaints about defunct handpumps, mini-water supply schemes and pipelines.Talking to TOI, secretary of the department Aradhana Patnaik said: “Every year, such helplines are made operational only after the onset of summer. We are beginning the process much earlier this year, so that the defunct water supply sources are identified before summer sets in.”The department has instructed district and block-level officials to ensure that all contact numbers, including the helplines, are shared with the citizens at the earliest. “The goal is to identify defunct water sources. The engineers have also been instructed to conduct weekly ground surveys to assess the situation,” Patnaik added.
